안녕하세요 (An-nyeong-ha-se-yo). 김대규입니다.

Friends call me Kimbo. I’m the guy behind Koreapedia.

I created Koreapedia to make it easier for others to connect to Korea, or connect to their inner Koreans.

I was born in Seoul, Korea in 1960 and immigrated to Australia in 1965 where I grew up and lost all my Korean language skills as a young child.

Later when visiting Korea I found my lack of Korean was a huge hindrance to forming a deeper connection with Korea or even just getting around - so I know well how language can be a big barrier for foreigners.

I also witnessed how my expansive minded Korean friends were locked into the small peninsular because of their inability to communicate and connect to the rest of the world.

Korea is called the Hermit Kingdom, and this is because of its geographic, cultural and linguistic isolation.

You can take this boy out of Korea, but you couldn’t take Korea out of the boy.

During my childhood the hot Australian sun dried out all the Korean language in me.

After that I have spent a lifetime reconnecting with Korea - and now I want to share with you all I have learnt during my journey back to Korea - and with your help build Koreapedia as a portal where the world can reach into Korea and share in Korea’s journey.

Now my mother is in her 90s and I am in my 60s. This will be our mother and son project together. Spiritually we are three generations spanning a century. Grandfather, his daughter, and her son. I hope all of you can join this Korean journey with us.

Koreapedia will be a social wiki about Korea - written in the world’s great languages, as well as a community for non Korean speakers who want to share and consume their knowledge and passion about Korea - for travel, curiosity and learning - as well as for academic research, and cultural and commercial exchange.

There is already much information about Korea online - but mostly in Korean - requiring online translation. Often problematic. Sometimes it's just hilarious. They are a hassle and dangerous if accuracy is important.

The language barrier also bars non Korean speakers from contributing their knowledge and unique outsider’s insights.

With a background of 40 years in the IT world, I started to imagine how I could use tech to open the yellow brick road to Korea.

Koreapedia will not only collect and share knowledge about Korea, it will also use that content to teach Korean, and connect people with common passions through forums, clubs and language exchanges. A social wiki. A knowledge and language exchange. Focused on Korea.

I invite all of you to join the journey my family started three lifetimes ago, and together we write the narrative of Korea in the world’s great languages, and open Korea you and to the world.
